I’m not sure how...but my latest fillup math revealed 16 mpg! I had to check it twice to be sure. I didn’t even spend much time on the freeway.
Im pretty sure its because the last fillup was ethanol free. Man its criminal that we are forced into that ethanol garbage when I just got 23% better mileage doing nothing but changing gas. Okay I also have the front driveshaft out still but when I did that before I didn’t register a legit change, in fact my last fillup before this one was regular e10 with the shaft out and I got 13.
I mean...16 is super poor still of course but I’m pretty happy. If this keeps up I could stand to save $200 a year even considering the higher cost of real gas.

Nice! I got 19 mpg recently on a mostly highway run on ethanol free gas. I wish I could get it around here. I only see it in rural areas of The People’s Republic of Wisconsin.

no, that’s not what happened. you don’t drive exactly the same under the exact same conditions all the time.
No, you don’t.

normally the only place I can get it is a small lake town 150 miles away, but the Maverik down the street started carrying it. I got 20 mpg in the GX that trip, which is about 1-2 better than normal

Just remember. In city driving I average about 20-24. And that’s a 1.8 4 banger :(

That sounds about right. I saw 16.9mpg on e0 gasoline and 100% highway driving. I’ve previously averaged 14.5 on the same stretch with normal e10 (normal) gasoline.

Running stock gearing (4.10) with 305/70r16, same diameter as a 285/75r16.

no I don’t. but i NEVER get more than 13-14. I check EVERYTIME. I’ve gotten above 15 twice since I started tracking (and post lift/regear/tires)
I can promise you that the cruiser doesn’t really care how you drive. In fact I did an expirement on that once just to see. I drove an entire tank like my hair was on fire. Floor it from every light, above the speed limit all the time, etc. The next tank I drove like a grandma and the result:
As you can see my moving average speed and moving average time reflect the driving style change

I used to average 21 in my 2.5 4

That is a huge improvement. In the winter when they put more ethanol in our fuel my mileage in my little mazda goes down to the low 20's. In the summer if I get the ethanol free at our local gas station I’m around 30 or so. The other thing I have noticed is that while modern diesels are getting good mpg compared to a gas engine you are dumping a ton of DEF into the truck which negates the savings of using diesel.

Beats the 16-20 in my 1.8 4 cylinder... With a tiny 12 gallon tank :(

Don’t forget that in the winter they reformulate to change the reed vapor pressure too, so even with pure gas your mileage suffers.

Huh. Now I want to try ethanol free gas for just a tank

These trucks respond really badly to e10 I guess. even my idle has smoothed out considerably.

man when I had no lift, stock gearing and the 285/75r16 I saw 17 once. that was a mighty day.

Yeah, the 1FZ was definitely not designed with ethanol in mind. I did a fair bit of reading up on e0 vs e10 petrol and the difference in energy density is surprising.

Guessing you got summer tires on it? When I put’em on my Civic it went from 30mpg to 25.

I’ve done LOTS of research into this, writing college papers and such. Its a freaking joke.

I’d totally nerd out and read that.
I’m all for reducing emissions, but I seriously question how much reduction occurs with 10% ethanol substitution when fuel economy increases by 15-20%.

Never even occurred to me that the tires could have something to do with it. Yep, summers. Although at this point I think most people would call them “drift spares”

Growing food for fuel is always a great idea... Not.
E85 is awesome when you are building a project for it. The MCM guys have made a great case for using it to make ludicrous power when property tuned for it.
But what good, beyond providing a reason for the corn lobby to exist, does putting it in our gas do for anyone but lobbyists and agribusiness CEOs?
We’d get more benefit simply making more fuel efficient vehicles.
Also does the older LC I6 like boost? I’d love to get one and throw some mild pressure at it just to have more useable power.

Thats the executive summary. When you add in the additional costs to harvest and refine ethanol there are no savings, its a net negative. there is literally NOTHING positive that comes from ethanol in gasoline (no, octane boosts aren’t a thing until well over 50%, even at 85% its only moderate boosts)
![]() 07/18/2017 at 23:31 |

Do it like boost? it do.
People are starting to put them into drag cars because it can handle more power reliably than the JZ (plus the additional displacement doesn’t hurt). This one has 1600 hp.
Stock they can handle a little but the main problems are fuel delivery and detonation. there are some 7-9 psi kits out there. TRD had a factory roots supercharger made up.
As fer carn? you nailed it.

Yeah, the 1FZ-FE will take quite a bit of boost in stock configuration!

A local Shell station just started offering 90 Octane ethanol free. I swear my cars run better on it that their 93 Octane V-Power. I haven’t done a mpg comparo, but I can tell a difference. It’s not a placebo effect.

Fun fact, my Lexus (GS300) got 16 mpg. Granted it was mostly city driving but it still got a pathetic 23 mpg highway.
